As a key member of the UK Engineering Team and GWR Site Management Team, the Engineering Manager South role has responsibility for all personnel and activities conducted by the Engineering South team based at GWR.  UK Engineering is part of the Edrington’s Global Supply Chain (GSC) function.  As of 2025 the UK Engineering Team covers 6 separate sites across Scotland with a headcount of 95.

 

This role is responsible for tactical decisions directly relating to Engineering activities and wider Global Supply Chain decisions which rely on process, compliance and project engineering input.  The role is also involved in strategic decisions in conjunction with the Head of UK Engineering and other key stakeholders such as the Head of GWR Manufacturing and their direct management team. The role is also responsible of delivering world-class engineering practices aligned with the company's strategic goals, driving innovation, and maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency to enhance overall business performance.

 

The Engineering Manager South is responsible and accountable (across Southern operational sites) for delivering the highest standards of engineering support, development, maintenance, and installation which meet both operational requirements - as demanded by our internal customers - and compliance and operational standards - as required by regulatory bodies (HSE and SEPA) and detailed in ISO 9,001 (Quality), 18,001 (Health & Safety) and 14,001 (Environment) standards.

Key roles & responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach and develop Engineering Process, Project, Compliance and Site Services teams
  • Lead Engineering Compliance and H&S management activity and inspection plans covering Management of Change, COMAH, DSEAR, PUWER, LOLER, Electrical and Pressure Systems and Building Standards
  • Provision of Engineering solutions and resource to support delivery of Edrington’s sustainability agenda.
  • Lead the delivery of annual GWR, Buchley and Queen Street Repair & Maintenance plans ensuring prioritisation of activities and management of associated budgets. 
  • Lead the delivery of GWR Capital Expenditure projects ensuring management oversight of budgets, timescales, and technical implementation
  • Support for Asset Insurance surveys including the assessment and completion of associated recommendations for improvement
  • Foster a culture of engagement, involvement, accountability and improvement through clearly defined roles and responsibilities, workload content, structure, and resource management
  • Ensure Engineering employees are involved and aware of GSC and Group performance and are engaged and motivated to contribute to the overall Group’s success
  • Ensure effective communication and liaison with our recognised trades union (Unite) to foster a co-operative and positive working partnership
  • Improve Customer relationships through strong communication, cross-functional working and responsiveness; and increased service through better resilience and reliability of plant/ equipment

Your Talent and Skills

To succeed in this role, you will require a degree in engineering/science or equivalent, with extensive leadership experience and knowledge of engineering/manufacturing best practices (especially in bottling and whisky processing). Understanding of engineering compliance and health & safety legislation is crucial, as well as strong financial, commercial, and project management skills. You will have awareness of supply chain processes (procurement, packaging, planning, logistics), proficiency in CI tools (LEAN, Six Sigma), and high PC literacy (Office 365, SAP, engineering systems)

 

The leadership and influencing requirements of the role require the job holder to be an experienced and skilled team manager with strong emotional intelligence and an adaptable management style. You will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to operate at senior level and engage with employees across the operational spectrum. A positive, resilient, and confident decision-maker with the ability to manage a complex and dynamic workload and manage a high performing team. With a continuous improvement mindset, you will have a great track record of managing and delivering change within the business, the ability to drive and support key initiatives and inspire others.
